H-D Completely Revises 2000 Model Year Softails
In addition to the new Twin Cam 88B engine, Harley has made significant changes to the Softail line: a larger oil tank featuring an easier to read dipstick, chrome external oil lines, a one-piece, 5-gallon fuel tank with gauge, a steering head lock, a new brake system (except Springers), sealed bearings and a sealed battery. Also noted was the absence of the Softail Custom (FXSTC) from the model lineup.
August 1, 1999

Milwaukee, WI - Harley-Davidson's Softail motorcycles have always been an enigma of sorts, with modern technology used to achieve the authentic and classic styling of years gone by.

For example: an innovative, smooth-riding, hidden rear suspension gives the appearance of hardtail styling, while a complex, computer-aided design allows the reintroduction of the Springer front suspension. For 2000, the introduction of the Twin Cam 88B engine with twin counter rotating balancers will improve Softail model power and ride-ability, while maintaining the classic tightly-packaged look that only a rigid-mounted motor can provide.

The design and development of a new frame to accommodate the Twin Cam 88B engine afforded Harley-Davidson engineers the opportunity to completely revise the Softail platform. In fact, the project was the largest engineering undertaking by Harley-Davidson in recent history, as measured by overall scope, implementation of new processes and number of new components.

The Twin Cam 88B was designed alongside the Twin Cam 88 and share many key components.

The Twin Cam 88B features twin counter rotating balancers to help cancel primary vibration, and a new transmission case and components improve shift quality. A larger oil tank features an easier-to-read dipstick, while a 70% reduction of welds on the oil tank and new chrome external oil lines enhance styling. A new one-piece, 5-gallon fuel tank with integrated fuel gauge provides increased range and convenience.

The new frame features a 34% improvement in overall stiffness and incorporates a steering head lock and new rear suspension bushings for improved suspension action. And the side stand has ben relocated for easier access.

In addition to the engine and chassis improvements, all 2000 model-year Softails (except Springers) will feature the new brake system which debuted on the Sportster, Touring and Dyna families. The brake system includes new four-piston fixed calipers, new brake pad material and newly designed uniform expanding rotors. Softails also get a new rear brake master cylinder for improved styling.

New sealed bearings on all models increase service intervals to 100,000 miles, eliminate end-play adjustments and resist power washing damage. And a new maintenance free sealed battery provides improved cranking power, significantly increased battery life, and eliminates the need for an overflow tube.
