Sydney, Australia - Mick Doohan, five-time 500cc motorcycling champion, has announced his retirement from the sport. Doohan stated the reason was continuing problems with injuries from his high-speed crash while qualifying for this year's Spanish Grand Prix.
Doohan's injuries included a broken right leg, shoulder and left wrist and some nerve damage that may be permanent. He has spent most of this year in the US receiving treatment for the injuries, including three operations.
Doohan stated he plans to remain involved in the sport with the Honda Racing Corporation. An announcement on his new role will be made next month.
