Rio de Janeiro - Kenny Roberts Jr. made motorcycle racing history this season as he became the first son of a former champ to win the World 500cc Grand Prix title. Roberts Jr. gave credit to his father, Kenny Roberts Sr., who was 500cc world champion in 1978, 1979 and 1980, for keeping him consistent and avoiding unnecessary risks.
Roberts Jr. finished sixth, as needed, in the Brazilian Grand Prix to clinch the championship title. Valentino Rossi of Italy won the race.
