Harley-Davidson Announces Bike Week Events
Harley-Davidson Motor Company is geared up and ready for Bike Week '98. Held in Daytona Beach, Fla., Bike Week will run March 2-8.
February 18, 1998

MILWAUKEE - Harley-Davidson Motor Company is geared up and ready for Bike Week '98. Held in Daytona Beach, Fla., Bike Week will run March 2-8.

Beginning March 2, motorcyclists can enjoy demonstration rides on all of the 1998 Harley-Davidson models as well as 1998 Buell models at the northeast corner of the Daytona International Speedway. The Motor Company will have an Indoor Show at the Daytona Beach Ocean Center, 101 N. Atlantic Avenue, which opens to the public Tuesday, March 3. Outside, attendees can stroll through the recently-renovated Harley-Davidson Traveling Museum. Visitors will be introduced to machines they may have heard about, but have never seen, such as the 1908 Harley-Davidson Single and the 1970 landspeed-record-breaking Bonneville Streamliner. Located outside the east entrance of the Ocean Center, the 48-foot trailer is open Tuesday through Saturday during regular show hours.

Sunglasses might be needed while admiring the chromed and customized motorcycles at the Ride-In Show on Wednesday. The outdoor show will be held on Wild Olive Avenue, located on the west side of the Ocean Center. With a $10 donation to the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), entrants will get their Harley into the show and receive a dash plaque customized with Harley-Davidson's '98 Bike Week graphics. Registration takes place Wednesday, 8-11 a.m. and awards, including cash prizes and trophies, will be distributed at 4:30 p.m. Admirers will also enjoy the sounds of Canadian blues guitarist, Sue Foley, who will rock the Ride-In Show entertainment stage 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. At noon, Biker Billy, known for his hot, spicy cooking, will hold his "Biker Billy Cooks With Fire" demonstration.

Those with an appreciation for skin and ink can check out the Genuine Harley-Davidson Tattoo Contest at 1 p.m. on Thursday in the Ocean Center. More than $5,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in each of five categories.

Once again, Harley-Davidson will be raising funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during Bike Week. This year Harley-Davidson is raffling off a 1998 fuel injected Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycle with special paint and graphics designed by Willie G. Davidson, the company's vice president of styling. Raffle tickets may be purchased all week at the Indoor Show. Attendees will also have a chance to partake in the Tenth Annual MDA Auction on Saturday. Items on the auction block include: a Mattel limited-edition Harley-Davidson Barbie doll; a gas tank signed by the Willie G. Davidson family; and other limited and one-of-a-kind Harley-Davidson memorabilia.

What better way to bring Bike Week to a close than with action-packed motorcycle racing? On Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Municipal Stadium, the AMA Grand National Dirt Track Series returns to Daytona Beach featuring eight-time AMA Grand National Harley-Davidson Champion, Scott Parker.

On Sunday, the racing action will be preceded by the 22nd Annual Parade to the Speedway.

With the Daytona International Speedway as its destination, the parade will line up at 8 a.m. and depart at 9 a.m. from the Bellaire Plaza, just north of the Ocean Center on Atlantic Ave. All brands of motorcycles are welcome to join the seemingly endless stream of Harley-Davidsons that will wind its way through the streets of Daytona Beach as thousands of onlookers cheer on the riders. Riders who purchase Harley Heaven tickets can watch Sunday's races from a reserved seating section near the chicane on the back straight at the Daytona International Speedway. The same price as general admission, Harley Heaven tickets can be purchased all week at the Indoor Show at the Ocean Center. In addition to reserved seating, attendees will receive a commemorative '98 Bike Week pin, a lunch served from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., and have the opportunity to win a slew of door prizes. Additionally, the drawing for the MDA raffle motorcycle will be held at Harley Heaven. The winner does not need to be present. Excitement escalates at 1:30 p.m. as Team Harley-Davidson racers Thomas Wilson and Pascal Picotte, each astride a Harley-Davidson VR1000 Superbike, challenge the other contenders at the 57th Daytona 200 Superbike Classic.
